Gun violence in Zamboanga City claimed the live of a Regional Trial Court judge, a highly respected figure in the community, in a brazen daylight attack in Tugbungan yesterday morning.

Judge Reynerio Estacio of the RTC Branch 14 succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in the body and died while undergoing treatment in a hospital. His wife Tessie who was seated beside him in a Honda CRV escaped unhurt.

Police said that Estacio was driving a Honda CRV with Tessie beside him on their way to the Hall of Justice when two men aboard a motorcycle blocked their path and one of them opened fire at them.

DZT gathered that Estacio and his wife had just left home from the interior of Narra Drive in Tugbungan when the gun attack happened. While the judge was maneuvering the vehicle on a blind curve of the road leading to the Tugbungan main road, two men aboard a motorcycle appeared and the backrider suddenly pumped bullets into the winshields hitting  the victim several times.

The gunmen quietly left the place after seeing the bullets hit Estacio.

A tricycle driver named Jun who is residing in the same place told the police that he was on his way home when he saw Tessie trying to revive her husband who was bleeding because of bullet wounds.

Jun said that it was already some 30 minutes when he arrived at the scene and still nobody was helping the judge, which prompted him to assist Tessie and place Estacio aboard his tricycle which sped to the hospital.

Jun said that while they were rushing to the hospital, Estacio was still talking to his wife,  but moments later he became unconscious until they arrived at the hospital.

Estacio was declared dead moments later while being treated in a private hospital.

Police investigators recovered several spent shells of .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

Estacio’s gunslaying took place even as police have adopted tight security measures including checkpoints in the different parts of the city.

Investigators immediately went to work focusing on the cases in the sala of the slain judge.

The brazen killing prompted the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)  ZAMBASULTA chapter to call for an overhaul of Zambo City Police Office should attacks on members of the judiciary continue.

In a media interview, IBP ZAMBASULTA chapter president Emilio Aquino condemned the gunslaying of Judge Estacio, challenging police officials to make Zamboanga City safe, or if they cannot, they should resign.
