The Zamboanga Sea-based Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force has brought down to the barangay level its campaign against human trafficking.

In coordination with the City Social Welfare and Development, the task force is conducting an advocacy campaign and training on human trafficking in the different barangays.

Chief Insp. Alexander Lorenzo, chief of the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime  (PCTC) Western Mindanao Field Office,  disclosed that the pilot campaign started in Barangay Tumaga  in the first week of February. The campaign and training is intended  to equip barangay officials with knowledge on how to detect and prevent human trafficking.

According  to Lorenzo, Zamboanga City is a transit point of human trafficking where victims of illegal recruiters and human smugglers pass through before going to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Middle East. Human traffickers also use Tawi- Tawi as their jumping point.

The campaign and training is also scheduled to be held in the other different barangays in the region.

The campaign and training is also a “one-stop shop” because the Department of Labor and Employment conducts a job fair therein together with the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency. — Allen Abastillas
