The Zamboanga City Rabies Control and Eradication Coordinating Council (ZCRCECC), in coordination with the Office of the City Veterinarian, will formally open the Rabies Awareness Month celebration in the city today, March 5.

ZCRCECC member and City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola said a motorcade from Pettit Barracks to Southcom Elementary School in Calarian will kick off the observance. Members of the ZCRCECC and many others are expected to join the parade.

A short program will follow that will culminate in a ceremonial vaccination of pets and film showing.

The month-long celebration is pursuant to Republic Act No. 9482, otherwise known as the “Anti-Rabies Act of 2007,” providing the control and elimination of human and animal rabies through education and vaccination.

The Rabies Awareness Month aims to drum up awareness on the effects of rabies as well as to promote responsible pet ownership in the city.

A series of vaccination activities in various barangays will also be held as part of the observance, Dr. Arriola disclosed. — Claudine Uniana
