5 nabbed for fishing in restricted zone PDF Print E-mail

Five fishermen were apprehended by men of the 901st Maritime Police for fishing at a restricted zone, having no permit and using prohibited net at the of Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology in Rio Hondo Thursday morning.

A police report disclosed that the maritime police led by Insp. Eurem Jay Macasil were conducting seaborne patrol near the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology around 8 a.m. when they spotted a red motorized pumpboat named Shermalyn with five fishermen aboard fishing inside a restricted zone.

Arrested were Shiekal Tuhal Y Kiddut, 28, Jonathan Faizal Y Hairal, 22, Jun-Jun Amie Y Tuhal, 15, and Musidi Sascuela Y Tuhal, 40. Seized from their possession were motorized banca with 16HP Honda engine, sixty meters fish net, wooden paddle and four kilos of assorted fishes.

The fishermen were placed under police custody while the boat was impounded.

Police said the five violated Section 89 and another section of fRepublic Act 8550 that declared that zone as restricted from fishing. Charges were readied against them.

Section 89. declared unlawful to engage in fishing using nets with mesh smaller than that which may be fixed by the Department, provided hat the prohibition on the use of fine mesh net shall not apply to the gathering of fry, glass eels, elvers, tabios, and alamang and such species which by their nature are small but already mature to be identified in the implementing rules and regulations by the Department.

Violation shall subject the offender to a fine from P2,000 to P20,000 or imprisonment from six months to two years or both such fine and imprisonment at the discretion of the court — Dan Toribio Jr.
